TCA press tour: ‘The Goldbergs’ brings a ‘Wonder Years’ vibe to ABC
Adam F. Goldberg probably had no idea during the 1980s when he was a nosy kid filming his outrageous family with a bulky video camera that he was collecting material that would form the basis for a network TV show.
Funny how life works out.
Goldberg’s adolescence is the inspiration for “The Goldbergs,” a new ABC comedy. He digitized 100 videos that he made of his family and used them as the pitch for his show.

The story is narrated in “The Wonder Years” style by the adult Adam as he looks back on growing up in the 1980s, when he was a 11-year-old budding director always carrying around a camera and filming his high-strung family. Patton Oswalt provides the narrating voice.
The geeky Adam (Sean Giambrone) deals with the craziness of his family, including his overbearing, overprotective mother, Beverly (Wendi McClendon-Covey); his hot-tempered father, Murray (Jeff Garlin); and his siblings. Also in the mix is the family’s beloved grandfather Al “Pops” Solomon (George Segal), a shamless ladies’ man who tutors Adam in the ways of love.
Goldberg said his real-life family was thrilled with the show. “They think it’s a nice homage. My mom is very excited. She feels it validates everything she ever did.”
