NBC’s ‘Blindspot’ filled with ‘twists and turns’ and tattoos

NBC’s new drama “Blindspot” is mysterious — but that’s kind of the point.

The show, which premieres Sept. 21 after “The Voice,” follows an FBI team investigating a mystery involving a Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) covered in intricate tattoos, each of which contains clues to crimes.

“Each episode is a puzzle piece,” said Sarah Schechter, one of the show’s executive producers, at the Television Critics Assn. summer media tour in Beverly Hills on Thursday.

The series is the latest from prolific writer-producer Greg Berlanti (“The Mysteries of Laura”). It costars Sullivan Stapleton, Audrey Esparza and Rob Brown.

“One of the hard things of developing the show is in the pilot we set an extraordinary amount of the story,” said Martin Gero, the show’s creator. “There’s a clear beginning, middle and end to the season. The back story is so incredibly dense that we can turn a lot of cards quickly.”

Jane’s tattoos are at the core of the story. Alexander, who wrestled in high school, said the tattoos take a whopping 7½ hours to put on.

“Honestly, with this character the sky’s the limit,” she said. “I expect everything. I’m game for it all.”

The show’s cast and producers said there are many unexpected moments throughout the series.

“We don’t leave bread crumbs; we leave whole loaves every episode of the story,” Gero said. “As we come through this mythology, there are a lot of twists and turns. Many of those start at ends of episodes.”

Ultimately, Berlanti said, he thinks the audience “will be quite satisifed at the end of the ride.”
