Stephen Colbert introduces Jon Batiste as ‘Late Show’ bandleader
First the Colbeard, now the bandleader: “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” is quickly taking shape.
And if it was up to the new host, it may be in the shape of a powdery beignet.
New Orleans-based musician Jon Batiste will lead Colbert’s house band on the “Late Show,” CBS announced Thursday.
“His music makes the audience feel so good, we may have to install a ‘Do Not Make Love’ sign,” Colbert said in a statement.
The new late-night host made his way to the Big Easy to introduce Batiste’s sound to fans — and indulge in a mountain of fluffy beignets — before the show’s Sept. 8 premiere.
Stay Human’s Batiste is a musician, educator and humanitarian and has a master’s degree from Juilliard, the network said. He comes from a long line of Louisiana musicians and has previously collaborated with Prince, Wynton Marsalis and Lenny Kravitz and appeared in Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer” and as himself in HBO’s New Orleans-set “Treme.”
“I’m thrilled! This is a match made in heaven. Get ready for a love riot in late night,” the jazz artist.
