Miley Cyrus crashes Ed Norton’s Halloween party on ‘SNL’

Did you feel sad when the Miley Cyrus-hosted episode of “Saturday Night Live” ended a few weeks ago, knowing that you probably wouldn’t get to see the singer twerk or stick her tongue out on the show for another season? Well, Christmas came early for you last night, as Cyrus made two appearances on Edward Norton’s episode, one in the monologue, where she stuck out her tongue, and another in a sketch about a freed slave where she, of course, twerked. Standard Miley fare. In unrelated news, she will be going on tour soon, twerking and tongue-sticking in a town near you!

When Miley wasn’t making her presence known, Norton gamely held down the fort as he hosted the Halloween-themed episode of the show, breaking out impressions of Woody Allen and Dustin Hoffman in “Rain Man” but not, surprisingly, “SNL” legend Dana Carvey, who Norton bears a striking resemblance to these days both in terms of looks and voice.

In one Halloween-themed sketch, he took on Owen Wilson in a trailer for Wes Anderson’s twee thriller “The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders” (where Alec Baldwin made an appearance as the narrator; the actor also dropped in during the monologue.) The “tale of handmade horror” made fun of Anderson’s signature adorable, Futura-fonted filmmaking style and brought in “SNL” cast members to play Anderson alumni such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Danny Glover and Adrien Brody.

In another scene, Norton played an old creep going through his strange collection of Halloween “treats” (including a Reese’s wrapper with a piece of kale inside it, a package of razor blades and a “Cars 2” box with no DVD in it: “Now who’s in control?”), accompanied by a woman named “Adult Ruth” (in contrast to Baby Ruth.) The sketch was reminiscent of a similar bit from a few seasons ago in which Steve Buscemi pulled his favorite holiday ornaments out of a box and said strange and disturbing things about them.

If you’ve felt like fall has been taken over by pumpkin-flavored treats this season, the “SNL” writers were right there with you; the episode also featured a memorable commercial for “Autumn’s Eve,” a pumpkin-spice scented feminine wash (the best moment of the sketch being the expression on Taran Killam’s face as he watches scented steam rise from his wife’s nether regions.)

One non-spooky, non-gynecological, non-Miley highlight of the show was musical guest Janelle Monáe, who worked the stage impressively on two high-energy, black-and-white-styled performances (“Dance Apocalyptic” and “Electric Lady”), dancing her earrings off in front of backup singers, flashing white lights and a brass section.

“SNL” returns live next week with Miley Cyrus as host and Miley Cyrus as musical guest, with a special appearance by Miley Cyrus. Just kidding: Kerry Washington will host, with Eminem serving as musical guest.
