Netflix gives ‘Hemlock Grove’ a second season

Eli Roth’s “Hemlock Grove” will get a second season on Netflix, though the Pennsylvania terrors will be slightly compressed.

The 10-episode second season (down three from its first) will roll out next year. And writer-producer Charles H. Eglee (“The Walking Dead,” “The Shield”) joins the creepy horror drama as an executive producer.

The series, which stars Famke Janssen (“X-Men”), Bill Skarsgard (“Simon & the Oaks”), and Dougray Scott (“Mission Impossible II”), explores the really weird stuff happening in a small Pennsylvania town -- and the secrets of its inhabitants.

Its debut season didn’t receive much praise from critics, and with Netflix not releasing any figures on how its originals are performing, it’s hard to say whether “Hemlock Grove” was a hit. But I guess we’re supposed to take Roth’s word for it?

“The worldwide fan response to Hemlock Grove was phenomenal,” Roth, horror master and the series’ executive producer, said in a statement. “Netflix members loved the potent combination of sexy monsters, mystery, and the dark family soap opera that ended with a huge twist, leaving audiences worldwide totally shocked. Season One was just a warm-up for what we have in store for season two. Get ready to be scared in ways you never expected.”

“Hemlock Grove” is the second of the online streaming giant’s original series to score a second season, behind “Lilyhammer.”

Production is set to begin later this year.
