“Killing Kennedy” delivered historic ratings for National Geographic Channel.

Sunday’s docudrama about the events leading to the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy — with Rob Lowe as the ill-fated leader — gave the network its highest total viewership ever, with an average of 3.4 million tuning in, according to Nielsen.

The movie was based on the bestselling book of the same title by Fox News host Bill O’Reilly and historian Martin Dugard. NatGeo’s presentation was timed with the 50th anniversary of JFK’s death this month.

Among adults aged 25 to 54 — most of whom were not even born during the time of the events depicted in the movie — “Killing Kennedy” equaled the high ratings for NatGeo’s “Killing Lincoln,” another movie based on an O’Reilly bestseller.

NatGeo plans to run “Killing Kennedy” again Friday.
