HBO renews ‘Silicon Valley’ and ‘Veep’

Good news for Mike Judge fans. The writer-director’s new HBO series “Silicon Valley” has been renewed for a second season. HBO announced the renewal on Monday, along with the fourth-season renewal of its Julia Louis-Dreyfus comedy “Veep.”

Both comedies, which air after HBO’s massive hit “Game of Thrones,” have done well by critics this season. “Silicon Valley” is Judge’s return to series TV after his hit “King of the Hill” ended in 2010 and “The Goode Family” was canceled after 13 episodes on ABC in 2009.

The series has aired three episodes of its eight-episode first season. Though fans will be thrilled to continue to follow the tech world satire starring Thomas Middleditch and T.J. Miller, the second season will be without the brilliant Christopher Evan Welch, whose portrayal of venture capitalist Peter Gregory has attracted much attention. Welch died during filming of the first season, though his death will not be addressed until Season 2.

“Veep” has also started to rake in the awards, picking up two Emmys last year for Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale as well as a Golden Globe for Louis-Dreyfus.

Both shows have remained consistent in the ratings, with “Silicon Valley” losing only a fraction of the nearly 2 million viewers it had for the premiere and “Veep” holding steady at just under a million viewers per episode.

The comedy renewals come on the heels of HBO picking up “Game of Thrones” for two more seasons, the first time the channel has renewed a series for more than one season at a time.
