Fox announces new series pickups for 2013-14 season

Fox got the upfront season rolling in a big way Wednesday by announcing the pickup of five new comedies and four new dramas for the 2013-14 season.

On the comedy side, Fox has ordered “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” a single-camera comedy from producers Dan Goor and Michael Schur of “Parks and Recreation,” which will star “SNL” alum Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher as a mismatched set of cops.

In “Dads,” from “Family Guy” creator and polarizing Oscars host Seth MacFarlane, Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi play childhood best friends whose fathers move in with them. “Enlisted” is a single-camera comedy about three brothers on a Florida Army base, written and created by “South Park” veteran Kevin Biegal, while “Us & Them,” starring Jason Ritter and Alexis Bledel, is adapted from the hit BBC sitcom “Gavin & Stacey.”

Rounding out the comedy slate is “Surviving Jack,” starring “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s” Christopher Meloni as a dad in ‘90s SoCal. It is based on Justin Halpern’s semi-autobiographical book, “I Suck at Girls.”

Now for the serious stuff: Fox has ordered “Almost Human,” from prolific producer J.J. Abrams and creator-executive producer J.H. Wyman. Set 25 years in the future at a time when flesh-and-blood cops work alongside androids, it stars Lili Taylor and Michael Ealy.

“Gang Related” is another law enforcement drama, albeit one a little closer to home: It stars Ramon Rodriguez as a member of L.A.’s anti-gang task force who finds his loyalties divided.

“Rake” features Greg Kinnear (in his broadcast series debut) as a “frustratingly charming criminal defense attorney whose chaotic and self-destructive personal life often gets in the way of his professional one.” In other words: “House” with lawyers.

Last but not least is the action-adventure “Sleepy Hollow,” which puts a sci-fi spin on the familiar tale. Tom Mison plays the ill-fated Ichabod Crane who, in a twist Washington Irving couldn’t possibly have seen coming, is revived from the grave and dragged 250 years into the future to help solve a historical mystery.

Fox will announce its complete fall lineup at its upfront presentation Monday in New York City.
