‘Game of Thrones’ wins 8 Creative Arts Emmys; ‘Horror Story’ takes 5

“Game of Thrones” and “American Horror Story: Freak Show” are off to a running start for the prime-time Emmy Awards next week following early wins at the Creative Arts Emmys presented Saturday night in Los Angeles, where Margo Martindale, Reg E. Cathey, Joan Cusack and Bradley Whitford also took home honors.

HBO’s medieval fantasy “Game of Thrones” led all winners Saturday with eight, including awards for production design, visual effects and casting. FX’s “American Horror Story: Freak Show” picked up five wins, including for hair styling, costumes and makeup.

In the guest actor categories for drama series, Martindale won for FX’s “The Americans” and Cathey for Netflix’s “House of Cards.” The guest actor awards for comedy series went to Cusack for Showtime’s “Shameless” and Whitford for Amazon Instant Video’s “Transparent.”

Among other notable wins: “Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis” for short-format live-action entertainment program, “The Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special” for variety special and “Louis C.K.” for variety special writing.

“The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” won for documentary or nonfiction series, and “Citizenfour” received honors for “exceptional merit in documentary filmmaking.” “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” won for interactive program. A full list of winners will follow shortly.

The Creative Arts Emmys will be telecast at 8 p.m. Saturday on FXX.
