It’s Cookie Monster’s time to shine in new ‘Sesame Street’ season
For a long time, Elmo was the shining star of “Sesame Street,” but when the long-running kids show returns for its 44th season on Sept. 16, it’s Cookie Monster who’s angling to grab all the buzz (and all the cookies, of course).
“Cookie’s Crumby Pictures” is a new segment being introduced that will help teach pre-schoolers self-regulation. But it’s also a chance for the big, blue, cookie-loving monster to get seriously hip.
The first segment unveiled by the Sesame Workshop features Cookie Monster parodying Icona Pop’s “I Love It!” The Cookie Monster version is “Me Want It” and it’s all about learning to temper that seemingly uncontrollable urge for cookies.
Upcoming installments of the series will include such film spoofs as “Life of Whoopie Pie,” “The Spy Who Loved Cookies,” “Les Mousserables” and “The Hungry Games.”
The inspiration for the new segment can no doubt be traced back to last summer’s viral hit, “Share It Maybe,” which featured Cookie Monster parodying Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe.” The video has had over 14 million views on YouTube since last July. Now it’s Cookie Monster’s time to be the hip Muppet of the moment.
The upcoming season of “Sesame Street” also boasts a huge lineup of guest stars from some decidedly un-kid-friendly places, including “Game of Thrones’” Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey, and “True Blood’s” Rutina Wesley. Other guest stars for the upcoming season include Charlize Theron, Forest Whitaker, Anna Kendrick, Lauren Graham, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Hank Azaria, Audra McDonald, Tyra Banks, Benjamin Bratt, Tom Bergeron, Usher, Dave Matthews, Romeo Santos, Henry Cavill and Tyler Perry.
The new season will also introduce new Latino human Sesame Street resident Armando, played by actor Ismael Cruz Cordova, who landed the role after an open casting call last year.
