CBS cancels Robin Williams comedy ‘The Crazy Ones’
It looks as if Robin Williams’ return to series TV was short-lived. CBS has axed his comedy “The Crazy Ones” after just one season.
Williams rose to stardom more than 30 years ago on “Mork & Mindy,” and his turn in “Crazy Ones” — playing an eccentric Chicago advertising executive — was touted as a return to his roots after a long and successful career in movies like “Good Will Hunting” and “Good Morning Vietnam.”
But the show, which also starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, earned mixed reviews from critics and struggled in the ratings.
Williams was the second sitcom legend to fizzle in a headlining role on broadcast TV this season. Michael J. Fox’s self-titled sitcom on NBC was already canceled.
In other CBS news, the network renewed its drama “The Mentalist” for Season 7. That will come as a relief to fans, given that the show had been on the proverbial bubble.
Joining “The Crazy Ones” on the cancellation list were the comedies “Bad Teacher” and “Friends with Better Lives” along with the drama “Hostages.”
CBS will announce its full fall schedule next week in New York.
