TCA press tour: ‘Breaking Bad’ is ending, but there may be more

The final chapter of “Breaking Bad,” AMC’s hit drama about a chemistry teacher who becomes a deadly criminal, has yet to air. But creator Vince Gilligan isn’t quite ready to let go.

Gilligan said he would love to develop a series revolving around Saul Goodman, the sleazy attorney who becomes involved with the show’s lead character, Walter White.

Said Gilligan during a session to promote the final episodes: “It is my fervent wish that there be a Saul Goodman spinoff.” He said he was speaking only for himself, and that any such project had not received a green light.

Bob Odenkirk, who plays Goodman, added, “I would very much like to do it. I know if Vince is writing it, it will be awesome.”

Though questions continue to swirl around how the series will end — and the ultimate fate of Walter White — Gilligan said he was very pleased with the conclusion of the drama.

“I’m very proud of the ending,” he said. “I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

That confidence appeared to be a far cry from what he was thinking when the show started in 2008. Although he said he knew he wanted to focus on a character who evolved “from Mr. Chips to Scarface,” he said, “I really can’t remember what the original ending was. I couldn’t see the forest for the trees.”

One thing that might jar his memory is a behind-the-scenes documentary on the series by filmmaker Stu Richardson that chronicles the show’s evolution from beginning to end. The two-hour documentary will appear in a future box set of the show’s five seasons.

Gilligan said he was “really happy” with the documentary.
