ABC cancels ‘Cristela’ after one season
Adios, “Cristela.”
ABC on Thursday canceled the sitcom starring Cristela Alonzo as a young Latina lawyer struggling to balance work and family in Dallas.
The network aired 22 episodes, with the last original on April 17.
Alonzo drew headlines for becoming the first Latina to create, produce and star in her own prime-time comedy for an English-language broadcast network.
But “Cristela” won only lukewarm praise from critics and struggled to build an audience. The finale drew 4.8 million total viewers, down 26% compared with the October premiere.
ABC might be looking at big changes in its Friday lineup next season. Another Friday sitcom, Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing,” was still awaiting word of its fate from network bosses as of Thursday night.
The network will officially roll out its 2015-16 lineup next week in New York.
