Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ arrives with media blitz
With the worldwide release today of Taylor Swift’s “1989” album, her media blitz in support of her fifth studio release is officially in full swing.
Tonight she’s the featured guest performer on the latest episode of NBC’s “The Voice,” coming on the heels of two high-profile L.A. appearances last week: a concert Thursday that shut down Hollywood Boulevard in conjunction with her drop-in on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” followed by her part in Friday’s We Can Survive breast cancer awareness show at the Hollywood Bowl.
This week she’s also making a couple of stops at ABC’s “Good Morning America” today and Thursday, and Wednesday she’ll be on the set of “The View” for more talk about her new music and other facets of her life.
She told GMA host Robin Roberts on Monday that she’s just been tapped to be the global ambassador for New York City in a tourism campaign built around the first track on “1989,” “Welcome to New York.”
It remains to be seen whether all the promotional activity results in her third consecutive album to sell more than 1 million copies in the first week of release. After 1-million-plus sales weeks for “Speak Now” in 2010 and “Red” in 2012, Billboard is projecting a first-week figure of 800,000 copies amid a continuing overall slide in music sales globally. That would more than double the biggest first-week sales of 2014 to date, Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories,” which sold 383,000 out of the gate back in May.
Meanwhile, writer-artist David Rees has posted a new Swift-inspired mashup album blending her music with that of AphexTwin, and he’s calling it — what else? — AphexSwift.
“I am a big fan of both these artists – I think they’ve each written some thrilling pop hooks and their production is amazing,” Rees wrote in a blog post. “I also just wanted to see if it could be done.”
His eight-song album has been posted to Soundcloud and features such tracks as “T4Trouble,” “We Are Never Ever Getting Girl/Boy Together” and “Why You Gotta Be So Flim.”
Calendar will have a full profile on Swift in Tuesday’s edition in which she discusses her new songs, her recent series of “secret session” listening parties with fans she handpicked off social media sites, her hiatus from dating and how that has affected her expectations regarding romance.
