Grammys 2015: Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’ wins song of the year

“Stay With Me,” Sam Smith’s stark soul ballad about an unrequited love, was named song of the year Sunday at the 57th Grammy Awards.

A songwriting prize, the Grammy went to Smith, James Napier and William Phillips. In its recorded form, “Stay With Me” was nominated as record of the year and pop solo performance; Smith’s album “In the Lonely Hour” was up for album of the year as well, while the singer earned best new artist.

“Why am I so emotional?” Smith sings. “No, it’s not a good look / Gain some self-control.”

“Stay With Me” beat out Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” Sia’s “Chandelier,” Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” and Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” for song of the year. Last year, Lorde won the prize for her hit “Royals”; other recent recipients include Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and “We Are Young” by Fun.

The Grammys are determined by about 13,000 voting members. The eligibility period for nominated recordings was Oct. 1, 2013, to Sept. 30, 2014. The 57th awards are being held at the Staples Center and telecast on CBS-TV. They are broadcast live except for viewers on the West Coast.
