Frances Bean Cobain: I don’t like Nirvana, but I’m a lot like Kurt

Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of late musician Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, revealed a lot about herself in a recent Rolling Stone interview -- including the fact that she is not a Nirvana fan.

There are a few songs the 22-year-old likes from her father’s band -- “Territorial Pissings” on Nevermind and “Dumb” on In Utero -- but overall, “I don’t really like Nirvana that much,” she said in the article, which was released Wednesday.

Frances also talked about the upcoming HBO documentary on her father’s life, “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.” Frances is an executive producer of the piece, which premieres May 4 and uses home videos, band footage and interviews to tell the story of the revered songwriter and guitarist, who killed himself in his Seattle home on April 5, 1994.

Frances, who, as an intern at Rolling Stone, sat near a giant painting of Kurt Cobain hanging on the wall, said the documentary allows her father to speak for himself; it won’t be glorified tales of a dead rock star, she said in the interview.

“For me, the film provided a lot more factual information about my father -- not just tall tales that were misconstrued, misremembered, rehashed, retold 10 different ways,” she said. “It was factual evidence of who my father was as a child, as a teenager, as a man, as a husband, as an artist. It explored every single aspect of who he was as a human being.”

The documentary aims to be an honest look at the 27-year-old with an enormously successful band who “didn’t want to be the … voice of a generation,” Frances told Rolling Stone.

Frances also told the magazine about when she realized the magnitude of her father’s fame.

“I was around 15 when I realized he was inescapable,” she said in the interview. “Even if I was in a car and had the radio on, there’s my dad.”

Still, even though she never really knew her father’s bandmates, Frances said she gave the former members of Nirvana what they call the “K.C. Jeebies” when she hung out with Grohl along with Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear.

“Dave said, ‘She is so much like Kurt.’ They were all talking amongst themselves, rehashing old stories I’d heard a million times. I was sitting in a chair, chain-smoking, looking down like this [affects total boredom]. And they went, ‘You are doing exactly what your father would have done.’ ”
