Daft Punk cancels ‘Colbert Report’ appearance for MTV VMA slot

Daft Punk failed to make a scheduled appearance on “The Colbert Report” on Tuesday night, causing host Stephen Colbert to complain to his audience that he, and they, had been “daft punk’d.”

The French duo reportedly canceled because of contractual obligations connected to its role in the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 25, where the act will appear with previously announced performers Lady Gaga and Kanye West.

Colbert used the opportunity to take some jabs at Daft Punk’s expense. “Apparently, Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards,” he said. “Don’t tell anyone, because fun fact: No one told me until two hours ago.”

And Daft Punk’s no-show didn’t stop Colbert from premiering his own video of the duo’s song “Get Lucky,” featuring an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Bryan Cranston, Hugh Laurie and Jimmy Fallon.

Why Colbert didn’t snag a couple of his show’s crew members, hustle them into motorcycle helmets and natty black suits and proceed with the interview is anybody’s guess.
