TriStar lands Meryl Streep rocker movie ‘Ricki and the Flash’
Get ready for Meryl Streep to strap on a guitar and rock out.
The 18-time Oscar nominee is set to play the lead role in the upcoming rock ‘n’ roll dramedy “Ricki and the Flash,” which TriStar Productions announced it has acquired.
In the film, to be directed by Jonathan Demme (“The Silence of the Lambs,” “Philadelphia”) from a script by “Juno” writer Diablo Cody, Streep will play a grocery store checkout lady by day and by night a fading rock musician who has one last chance to reconnect with her estranged family.

Tom Rothman, chairman of TriStar Productions, said in a statement today, “We feel lucky as hell to have been selected by such outstanding filmmakers to be the dive bar for Ricki and her band. We aspire to be the best roadies ever.”
Streep previously demonstrated her singing prowess in “Mamma Mia” and will do so again in the upcoming “Into the Woods”; both films are adaptations of popular stage musicals.
“Ricki” is scheduled to shoot in the fall, which should give the actress some time to hone her guitar chops.
Demme also has experience with musical films, having directed the Talking Heads concert movie “Stop Making Sense” and a trilogy of Neil Young documentaries.
“Ricki” will be produced by Marc Platt, who is also on board the “Into the Woods” film and produced the Broadway hit “Wicked,” and Mason Novick, who had worked with Cody on “Juno” and “Young Adult.”
