‘Tootsie’ crowned best movie ever by Time Out New York actor poll
“Tootsie,” the 1982 comedy starring Dustin Hoffman as a neurotic actor who dresses as a woman to land a plum role on a soap opera, has been named the best film of all time -- at least according to actors -- by Time Out New York.
To determine its ranking of the top 100 movies ever, the listings-driven magazine polled actors on both sides of the Atlantic, including Bill Hader, Andy Serkis, Juliette Binoche, Zoe Kazan, Anthony Mackie and Brie Larson.
The brain trust’s top choice will likely have some cinephiles calling for a timeout, or at least an explanation. Directed by Sydney Pollack, “Tootsie” is generally considered a great American comedy — but not a masterpiece on the level of, say, “The Godfather” (No. 2 on the list), “Citizen Kane” (No. 39) or “Vertigo” (not on the list).
To give an example of the participants’ criteria, comedian Nick Kroll was cited as saying, “Who doesn’t want to see Dustin Hoffman in a dress talking with a Southern accent?”
Time Out New York film editor Joshua Rothkopf added in a statement, “A modern-day classic like ‘Tootsie’ points to virtues like humor, speed, sympathy, justice and heart, the priorities of actors and viewers alike.”
Rounding out the top 10 films are “A Woman Under the Influence,” “Cinema Paradiso,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “The Godfather Part II,” “Annie Hall,” “Boogie Nights,” “The Red Shoes” and “Taxi Driver.”
