Spider-Man is taking a backseat to his rogues gallery.

Columbia Pictures has scheduled “The Sinister Six,” a spinoff movie featuring an all-star lineup of Spidey villains, for a Nov. 11, 2016, release. As part of the move, the studio has pushed “The Amazing Spider-Man 3” back two years, to 2018.

“Amazing Spider-Man 3” had been slated for release on June 10, 2016, a date that will now be filled by the adventure film “Uncharted,” based on the popular PlayStation video game series. “ASM 4” had been scheduled for release on May 4, 2018, but will presumably open at a later date.

The scheduling shake-up follows the disappointing box-office performance of Marc Webb’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which has grossed more than $700 million worldwide but still trails its 2012 predecessor and all three of Sam Raimi’s original “Spider-Man” movies.

Drew Goddard (“The Cabin in the Woods”) is writing and directing the “Sinister Six” spinoff, which is based on the team of supervillains first introduced in the pages of “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 1964. In the comics, the original six are Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio and Sandman.

The “Amazing Spider-Man 2” already introduced its Electro (Jamie Foxx) and teased Doc Ock and the Vulture. Other “Sinister Six” candidates include the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) and the Rhino (Paul Giamatti).

Doug Belgrad, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, said in a statement, “With ‘Sinister Six’ in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016.”
