Plane carrying ‘Salinger’ team crash lands at Telluride airport

A plane carrying some people connected with the film “Salinger,” a highly anticipated documentary about writer J.D. Salinger, crash-landed at Telluride Regional Airport in southwestern Colorado on Sunday afternoon.

The left landing gear collapsed, and the Beechcraft 1900D turbo-prop skidded on its belly, but no injuries were reported to the 10 passengers and two crew members aboard, according to the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office. A warning light had indicated there was a problem with the equipment before landing, the sheriff’s office said, so emergency crews were alerted and stood by as the plane touched down shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday. There was no smoke or fire.

Among those reported on board the charter were David Shields, coauthor of “Salinger,” the new biography of the author of “Catcher in the Rye” that has also been made into a documentary that is screening at the Telluride Film Festival, and Emmy Chang, a publicity executive at the Weinstein Co., the film’s distributor.

“Everyone’s fine. We all walked away,” said one passenger who asked not to be identified. “I consider myself very, very lucky.”

The National Safety Transportation Board plans to investigate the incident.
