Austrian actor Maximilian Schell, 83, whose portrayal of a defense attorney in the 1961 drama “Judgment at Nuremberg” earned him an Academy Award, died Friday in a hospital in Innsbruck, according to his agent Patricia Baumbauer.

Schell had been having lung problems, which led to him being admitted to the hospital, said Baumbauer, reached outside Munich, Germany. Schell’s wife, Iva, was with him when he died.

He was a prolific actor who was Oscar-nominated for two other roles -- in “Julia” (1977) and “The Man in the Glass Booth” (1975).

Schell was also a director -- his documentary about Marlene Dietrich, “Marlene” (1984), was in part about her refusal to appear on camera for the film.

His first U.S. film was “The Young Lions” (1958), a World War II drama in which he appeared with Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift and Dean Martin.
