‘Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation’ trailer: Tom Cruise’s work never done
Tom Cruise’s super-spy Ethan Hunt faces his usual share of challenges in the new trailer for “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation,” whether dodging gun-toting motorcycle henchmen, carrying out a perilous underwater break-in or hanging off the door of an airborne cargo plane.
But his greatest threat of all might come from none other than … Washington bean counters. As Alec Baldwin’s CIA chief says in the two-and-a-half-minute clip, “The time has come to dissolve the IMF. It’s not just a rogue organization, it is a disgraced one.”
Funny he should mention rogue organizations, because while he’s trying to shut down Hunt and his team — including tech whiz Benji (Simon Pegg), agent-turned-analyst Brandt (Jeremy Renner) and new ally Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) — they’re trying to protect the world from the Syndicate, a shadowy evil counterpart to the Impossible Missions Force.

This being a “Mission: Impossible” movie, that sets the stage for all manner of over-the-top action set pieces, this time mounted by writer-director Christopher McQuarrie (“The Way of the Gun,” “Jack Reacher”).
Technically, we won’t find out if Hunt and the gang get downsized until July 31, when Paramount Pictures releases “Rogue Nation.” But considering that the four previous installments of the “M:I” franchise have combined to gross more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office, it’s probably safe to assume they’re not out of a job just yet.
