‘Furious 7’ speeds away with top prize at Golden Trailer Awards

Vin Diesel’s prediction that “Furious 7” would win best picture at the Oscars has yet to come true, but the high-octane blockbuster did claim several gilded trophies Wednesday night at the Golden Trailer Awards, including the prize for best of show.

Honoring the best in motion-picture marketing, the 16th annual ceremony bestowed trophies in 78 categories — though in keeping with the spirit of what has been called “the Academy Awards for the short attention span,” only 20 were handed out before a live crowd at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills. Actor and comedian T.J. Miller emceed the show.

In addition to claiming the evening’s top prize, “Furious 7” won for best action trailer, best TV spot and best opening weekend. AV squad cut the top trailer, titled “Family,” which is embedded above with some fellow winners.

The military drama “American Sniper” and the post-apocalyptic YA actioner “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1” tied for the most awards, winning five each, including best thriller trailer for the former and best fantasy adventure trailer for the latter.

Other winning films included “Big Hero 6” for animation trailer, “Ted 2” for comedy trailer, “Selma” for drama trailer and “Boyhood” for independent trailer.

Among studios, Universal Pictures (home to “Furious 7”) was the big winner of the night, taking home 15 GTAs.
