‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ dominates the Critics’ Choice Awards nominations
‘Mad Max: Fury Road,” George Miller’s high-octane reboot of his classic post-apocalyptic film series, earned 13 Critics’ Choice Awards nominations Monday morning.
The Warner Bros. release was nominated for best picture, best actress and actress in an action movie for Charlize Theron, and best actor in an action movie for Tom Hardy. “Mad Max” also received nominations for directing, cinematography, production design, editing, costume design, hair and makeup and in visual effects.
“Carol,” “The Martian” and “The Revenant” scored nine nominations apiece, “Spotlight” garnered eight, “The Big Short” received seven and “The Hateful Eight” six.

The Broadcast Film Critics Assn. and the Broadcast Television Journalist Assn. present the Critics’ Choice Awards. BFCA represents more than 300 television, radio and online critics. BJTA includes more than 100 journalists who cover TV for television viewers, radio listeners and online audiences.
Vying with “Mad Max” for outstanding motion picture are “The Big Short,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Brooklyn,” “Carol,” “The Martian,” “The Revenant,””Room,” “Sicario” and “Spotlight.”
Nominated for lead actor are Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo,” Matt Damon for “The Martian,” Johnny Depp for “Black Mass,” Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant,” Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Eddie Redmayne for “The Danish Girl.”
Joining Theron in the lead actress category are Cate Blanchett for “Carol,” Brie Larson for “Room,” Jennifer Lawrence for “Joy,” Charlotte Rampling for “45 Years” and Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn.”
In contention for supporting actor are Paul Dano for “Love & Mercy,” Tom Hardy for “The Revenant,” Mark Ruffalo for “Spotlight,” Mark Rylance for “Bridge of Spies,” Michael Shannon for “99 Homes” and Sylvester Stallone for “Creed.”
Nominees for supporting actress are Jennifer Jason Leigh for “The Hateful Eight,” Rooney Mara for “Carol,” Rachel McAdams for “Spotlight,” Helen Mirren for “Trumbo,” Alicia Vikander for “The Danish Girl” and Kate Winslet for “Steve Jobs.”
Vying for acting ensemble are the casts of “The Big Short,” “The Hateful Eight,” “Spotlight,” “Straight Outta Compton” and “Trumbo.”

Joining Miller in the director category are Todd Hayes for “Carol,” Alejandro G. Iñárritu for “The Revenant,” Tom McCarthy for “Spotlight,” Ridley Scott for “The Martian” and Steven Spielberg for “Bridge of Spies.”
Nominees for animated feature are “Anomalisa,” “The Good Dinosaur,” “Inside Out,” “The Peanuts Movie” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie.”
Competing for top documentary are “Amy,” “Cartel Land,” “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” “He Named Me Malala,” “The Look of Silence” and “Where to Invade Next.”

Drama series nominees are “Empire,” “Mr. Robot,” “Penny Dreadful,” “Rectify,” “The Knick,” “The Leftovers” and “UnREAL.”
The winners of the 21st Critics’ Choice Awards will be announced at a gala broadcast live from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on A&E, Lifetime and LMN on Jan. 17. Comedian T.J. Miller will host.
