Winona Ryder confirms ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. Or more specifically, Lydia, Lydia, Lydia.

Winona Ryder has confirmed that a “Beetlejuice” sequel is indeed in the works.

During an appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” Ryder was asked whether she could confirm that a follow-up to the 1988 film was happening. And she did.

“Um. I think I can confirm it. Because Tim Burton did this interview,” said Ryder. “Like it was very hush-hush top secret, ‘I don’t know, it might happen. I don’t know.’ And then he was doing some press for ‘Big Eyes’ and he did an on-camera interview and he said, ‘Oh yeah, we’re doing it and Winona’s going to be in it.’”

Ryder then threw up her hands to express her disbelief.

“If he said it, I can,” Ryder continued. “But I really don’t know much more than anybody else.”

Ryder, of course, played goth teen Lydia Deetz in the original film. After moving into a house with her father and stepmother, she befriends the ghosts of the deceased couple who were the original residents of the house.

Beetlejuice (or Betelgeuse) is a “bio-exorcist” called on by the ghosts to help them get rid of the new living residents of their house (although he turns out to be a bit more than the couple can handle).

Fans have kept their hopes up for a follow-up film because both Michael Keaton, who played Beetlejuice, and director Tim Burton have recently stated their interest in reuniting for a “Beetlejuice” sequel.

During the “Late Night” interview, Ryder also shared how there are still kids who approach her that are fans of “Beetlejuice.”

“It must mean there’s something very sort of pure about it, in a weird way,” said Ryder.
