Sinead O’Connor posts pained note to Facebook page

Singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor claimed Sunday that “a horrific set of betrayals” by her family led her to take an overdose of pills.

Irish news outlet BreakingNews.ie reported that law enforcement officials said that O’Connor is “safe and sound” and receiving medical assistance.

The controversial singer, who rose to fame in the late 1980s and is best known for her moody hit version of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” wrote on her verified Facebook page that she had been in disputes with several family members, including her husband, her son and her son’s girlfriend.

“There is only so much any woman can be expected to bear,” she wrote. “What was done to me this week was appalling cruelty.

“The last two nights finished me off. I have taken an overdose,” it continued. “There is no other way to get respect. I am not at home, I’m at a hotel, somewhere in Ireland, under another name.”

Other posts on the page the last couple of days detailed health issues, including a recent surgery and depression, a custody battle with the father of one of her sons and what she called a lack of support from her older sons and their partners.

O’Connor has been embroiled at various times in several controversies because of her criticism of the Roman Catholic Church and her outspokenness on women’s rights.
