Designer Tom Ford reveals he and Richard Buckley are married

Tom Ford and his longtime partner, Richard Buckley, have gotten married, the designer revealed at an event in London on Monday night.

“We are now married, which is nice,” the 52-year-old told Vogue. “I know that was just made legal in the U.K., which is great; we were married in the States.”

The two — who’ve been together for 27 years after first meeting at a 1986 fashion show when Ford was 25 — have a son, Alexander John Buckley Ford, born in September 2012.

Having Alexander around has changed life in at least one big way for Ford, who said Monday night that he carries a cellphone only because there’s an app that allows him to watch the boy sleeping. The change?

“I used to spend most of my time at home naked, but now we have a child it means we have a nanny and so I can’t come downstairs naked and have a bowl of cereal in the morning,” the designer told Vogue, via GQ. “Before I had a child I literally took off all my clothes the minute I walked in the door.”

Ford also wrote an essay in Out magazine for its “Love Issue” in 2011 in which he talked about his and Buckley’s relationship.

“One of the things that always amuses me — ‘amuses’ isn’t even the right word, because it doesn’t amuse me — but often,” Ford said, “I’m at dinner parties with very close friends, straight, and they realize that Richard and I have been together 24 years, and the response is often, ‘Wow, you guys have been together 24 years! That’s so amazing. I don’t think of gay men being together that long.’ And I’m, like, ‘Why? What are you talking about?’ Some of the longest relationships I know of are same-sex couples.”

He added, “Richard and I are bound together, and I think that’s what that recognition is when you look someone in the eyes and you feel like you’ve known them forever. It is a kind of coming home.”

Buckley, 66, is a journalist who was formerly editor in chief of Vogue Hommes International.
