Sandra Bullock, wannabe waitress, says her son (and divorce) made her grow up
Sandra Bullock, small-town waitress? Imagine the wait for a table at that diner.
“I always thought that I’d end up as a waitress in a town somewhere; the oldest waitress, who knew everybody. I liked the idea of making everyone feel comfortable because it makes me feel more comfortable. I’m oddly an introvert,” the Oscar winner tells her “Our Brand Is Crisis” costar Zoe Kazan in the November issue of Glamour.
“Because of that aspect of my personality, I like the idea of taking care of the team — hoping that someone will, eventually, take care of me back.”
Her team, of course, includes 5-year-old son Louis and, in a guest-starring role, photographer Bryan Randall — but more on the big guy later. In Bullock’s life, the little guy always comes first.
The actress, 51, says she didn’t feel like an adult until about five years ago, and Louis was a huge part of that.
“Motherhood and divorce — and not just divorce but the onslaught,” she says, referring to the media firestorm that accompanied her graceful handling of the ugly situation caused by ex-husband Jesse James’ multiple infidelities. “Again, I let it affect me. I heard it all. And I had to step back and go, ‘I have the greatest gift in little Louis, and I’m gonna let him see the woman I want him to know.’ ”
Adopting a child in the middle of that mess — fans will remember how stealth the adoption was, with Bullock going so far as to time when she took her trash to the curb to prevent the curious from smelling dirty diapers and discovering her then-secret — forced her to get her act together, she says.
Now, Bullock says, she wants her son, who is African American, “to be judged for the man he is.”
“We are at a point now where if we don’t do something, we will have destroyed what so many amazing people have done. ... But sometimes it needs to get really loud for people to say, ‘I can’t unsee this.’ If I could ride in a bubble with him for the rest of his life, I would. But I can’t.”
Lately, however, it seems she’s been riding in a happy bubble with Randall, whom she met when he shot pictures of her son. People has a picture of the couple looking extremely happy together, apparently heading somewhere that required them to bring a brightly wrapped gift.
The two have been dating since early summer and attended Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux’s surprise wedding, the mag said, but they aren’t living together or engaged or anything like that.
And what about that rumor that she’s adopted a daughter? Still firmly a rumor.
The issue of Glamour with Bullock on the cover hits newsstands Tuesday.
