President Obama has Valentine's Day figured out: Declare your love for your wife on national TV a couple of days early, then go play golf.

"I love you so much," the president said to Michelle Obama via "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Friday. "I Obamacare about you more than you even know."

He'd taped the appearance on Thursday, when he was in L.A. after attending fundraisers in the Bay Area. (John Legend provided the entertainment at a Hancock Park fundraiser Thursday evening.)

The first lady got the ball rolling with a videotaped message that included a poem: "Roses are red, violets are blue, you are the president and I am your boo."

The leader of the free world then got an assist from DeGeneres, who ushered him to a cheesy Valentine's-themed set where he read his message to Michelle off a prompter. "Somebody call the situation room, because things are about to get hot," he said while sexy R&B played in the background. Then he promised to feed his wife zucchini bread and veggies on the holiday. But he got tripped up describing what would follow.

"I'm going to give you a massage — while you watch 'Ellen's Design Challenge' on HGTV?," he said.

Hey, that's the risk you run when you don't write your own material.

Turns out the first couple — whose first date was the stuff movies are made of — already got romantic on Monday with a fancy dinner out. When Valentine's Day rolls around on Sunday, the president will be golfing sans familia in Rancho Mirage, where he'll stay for the weekend after having dinner there Friday night with King Abdullah II of Jordan, the New York Daily News reported.

And that is the risk you run when Valentine's Day falls right next to another, perhaps bigger holiday: Presidents Day. Hard to argue with executive privilege.
