Think Lena Dunham didn’t vote? Welcome to the steampunk corn maze
Lena Dunham did too vote, ya big meanies! Even if a New York politics blog thought it had uncovered proof that she didn’t.
“Hey kids, some people on the internet are saying I didn’t vote. Some of them are still mad I used a sexy metaphor re: voting. Read on,” the “Girls” star and creator tweeted Thursday.
“Some people” would refer to New York politics blog Room 8 — later picked up by larger outlets — which on Wednesday revisited Dunham’s suggestive ad about her “first time” voting for Barack Obama and then declared that Dunham hadn’t had, well, a “second time.”

The blog reported that “according to New York City’s voter file, a Lena Dunham registered to vote in Brooklyn did not vote in the 2012 general election or in any local elections since she moved from her prior address in Tribeca.”
Sounds damning (and in line with the fact that she actually didn’t vote in the first presidential election she was eligible to participate in), until you get Dunham’s side of the story.
“I did vote,” she wrote. “I tried to get an absentee ballot but, because our nation’s voting system is a steampunk cornmaze, it didn’t arrive.
“So not to be a martyr about it but I flew to New York to vote. I wasn’t sure if my change of address had officially been registered so I went to my old polling place with my dad, where they let me vote by affidavit (what was totally allowed.)”
But even that story had its critics, of a supportive sort.
“Had it indeed been a steampunk cornmaze your ballot would have arrived promptly via a beautiful & ornate brass pneumatic tube,” tweeted singer-songwriter Michael Penn, riffing off Dunham’s vivid image. (Click these links if you don’t get “steampunk” or “corn maze.” )
Dunham appeared to be keeping her sense of humor about the situation. The loyal Obama supporter retweeted Penn’s delicious comment shortly after revealing even more truth.
“Obviously I voted for Romney,” she joked. “I hope everyone has a nice day.”
