Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt split up with ‘great sadness’

Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt, one of Hollywood’s longest-running committed-but-not-married celebrity couples, have called it quits.

Hamm, 44, and Westfeldt, 45, said in a joint statement, “With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history.”

Heck, now we’re sad too.

“We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward,” they said. Sounds amicable?

Hamm’s come through a period of significant change in the past year and a half, with May’s much-hyped end of “Mad Men,” the series that earned him a slew of best actor Emmy nominations, coming after filming of the series wrapped in July 2014. There was a voluntary 30-day rehab stint that ended in March, and in April, a rumor that the “Kissing Jessica Stein” actress had broken up with him while he was in rehab was denied by their reps.

Though they did work together in her film “Friends With Kids,” the two have no children together. They met when they were just getting started in the business, according to the New York Times, and Westfeldt told the paper in 2012, “I never thought I’d be this age and not have kids. But my life has also gone in a million ways I never anticipated. I kept feeling like I’d wake up with absolute clarity, and I haven’t.

“And we have a pretty great life together,” she continued. “The chance that we’ll regret it doesn’t seem like a compelling enough reason to do it.”

With the couple somewhat regularly (and mistakenly) represented over the years as husband and wife, Hamm was pushed to explain his views on marriage in a 2014 Playboy interview. He said tying the knot was “never a discussion” between him and Westfeldt.

“I think marriage often is an arrangement between families more than an arrangement between the two people involved,” he told the magazine. “I don’t have a particularly defined example of marriage in my life.

“My parents got divorced when I was 2 and never remarried. So it doesn’t mean anything to me. I don’t mean to say that it shouldn’t mean things to other people. I’m not judging it one way or another. It’s just my experience. I don’t have that paragon of married life to look at and think, ‘Oh yeah, that’s it! That’s what I want!’ ”

And so a summer of major splits rolls along toward fall.
