Jennifer Lawrence on nude photos: Angry, yes. But apologetic? No way

Jennifer Lawrence is saying a lot about those nude photos of her that were stolen, but she’s not saying she’s sorry.

And that, friends, is why she didn’t blast out a statement right after the pictures were posted online Aug. 30: Everything she wrote just made her cry or get angry, she tells Vanity Fair in its upcoming issue.

“I started to write an apology, but I don’t have anything to say I’m sorry for,” the Oscar-winner told the magazine in an addendum to a cover-story interview primarily conducted a couple of weeks before the photos went public. “I was in a loving, healthy, great relationship for four years. It was long distance, and either your boyfriend is going to look at porn or he’s going to look at you.”

She was presumably referring to her relationship with Nicholas Hoult, the London-based “X-Men” costar she reportedly had a “very amicable” breakup with at the end of the summer. (Hoult, incidentally, has been getting his villain on lately for Jaguar. It’s fun.)

And those who looked at the pictures who were not Mr. Hoult, or a person similarly authorized? “You’re perpetuating a sexual offense,” Lawrence said, calling what happened a sex crime, not a scandal.

“You should cower with shame. Even people who I know and love say, ‘Oh, yeah, I looked at the pictures.’ I don’t want to get mad, but at the same time I’m thinking, I didn’t tell you that you could look at my naked body.”

Sure, she’s a public figure, but that kind of violation does not come with the territory, she said. Her body, her choice, and she didn’t choose to give the entire world permission to see her in those private moments. How “empty inside” must the perpetrators be? She said she can’t imagine.

And as angry as she was, as much as she cried, no matter how brightly her star is currently shining, she was still mortified when she had to call her father with the news.

“I don’t care how much money I get for ‘The Hunger Games,’” the 24-year-old told the magazine, invoking her reported $10-million “Catching Fire” payday. “I promise you, anybody given the choice of that kind of money or having to make a phone call to tell your dad that something like that has happened, it’s not worth it.”

But hey, she’s still Jennifer Lawrence, which meant a little levity no matter how dire the circumstances.

“Fortunately,” she said, “he was playing golf, so he was in a good mood.”
