Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin reach split settlement, consciously divorce
Conscious uncoupling may just be another way of saying we’re probably, definitely divorcing: Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have reached a divorce settlement a year after announcing their conversation-starting split.
The Oscar-winning actress and the Coldplay frontman filed the petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court in pro per -- that is, representing themselves -- on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences, according to court documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday.
Martin, 38, was listed as the respondent on the same document.
Paltrow, 42, listed the couple’s date of separation as May 6, 2013, nearly a full year ahead of her announcement that she and Martin had “consciously uncoupled.” They were married for nine years and five months before separating, the documents said.
The couple agreed to joint legal and physical custody of their two children, daughter Apple, 10, and son Moses, 9.
TMZ reported on Monday that the filing was imminent and a “done deal” after the A-listers used business managers to reach an agreement regarding property and custody.
Terms of their separate and community property arrangements were still to be determined, the filing said. Per California law, the divorce can’t be finalized for another six months.
In March 2014, the “Iron Man 3” actress announced their unique parting of ways in a Goop post titled “Conscious Uncoupling” -- a move that would permanently associate the term with the upper-crust tastemaker.
“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate,” the pair wrote. “We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.”
The “Mortdecai” actress and the English rocker began dating in 2002 and announced that Paltrow was pregnant in December 2003. Two days after that announcement, they tied the knot in a quiet ceremony in Santa Barbara on Dec. 5, 2003.
Since the uncoupling, the former couple has struck up new, separate romances. Martin raised eyebrows with his unexpected relationship with another blond Oscar-winner, Jennifer Lawrence, whom he has been linked to on-and-off since August 2014. Meanwhile, Paltrow is said to be dating “Glee” showrunner Brad Falchuk after she guest-starred on the Fox series.
Reps for the couple did not respond to requests for comment.
