Gisele Bundchen retires from the runway with gratitude
Gisele Bundchen gave thanks Wednesday for 20 years of fashion shows, posting a modeling shot of her at age 14 as she acknowledged that her runway work at Sao Paulo Fashion Week in Brazil would be her last.
“I am grateful that at 14, I was given the opportunity to start this journey,” the Brazilian beauty wrote on Instagram. “Today after 20 years in the industry, it is a privilege to be doing my last fashion show by choice and yet still be working in other facets of the business.”
She then said all that again, in Portuguese.
“Automatically my body tells me if what I do is worth it, and it asked to stop,” the 34-year-old mother of two told a Sao Paulo newspaper on Saturday.
Word that Bundchen was planning to walk away from walking the runway had bubbled up in March.
She told Folha de Sao Paulo that she plans to continue working with other projects and wants to spend more time with her two kids -- Vivian, 2, and Benjamin, 5 -- and husband Tom Brady.
Bundchen has been, according to Forbes, the highest paid model in the world for eight years running, with her 2014 take estimated at $47 million.
Her other projects have included contracts with H&M, Chanel, Carolina Herrera, Pantene hair products and Oral-B in Brazil, the magazine said, plus some design work for Grendene sandals and Hope lingerie, which does Gisele Bundchen Intimates.
