George Michael car crash results in cuts, bruises for singer

Singer George Michael has been involved in a car crash in England that resulted in a helicopter airlift to a hospital.

The former Wham! singer, 49, was a passenger in his Range Rover on London’s M1 highway Thursday when the accident occurred around 5:50 p.m., the BBC reported.

His rep Connie Filippello confirmed Michael’s involvement in a statement, adding that no other vehicles or third parties were involved. Michael is said to have suffered from a few “superficial cuts and bruises but is fine.”

Several reports published Friday said that Michael was the person who was airlifted to a hospital. However, a spokesperson for the ambulance service told Sky News that a different man involved in the crash was taken by air ambulance to be treated for a head injury, according to the Associated Press.

“The man who we believe to be in his 40s sustained a head injury and following treatment, stabilization and immobilization by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to hospital for further care,” ambulance spokesman Gary Sanderson said.

As of Friday morning local time, the “Careless Whisper” crooner was still being treated in a specialist trauma center in London, the Daily Mail reported.

The circumstances of the accident are unclear, but police said that the northbound side of the carriageway was closed for an hour after the accident to investigate and allow the helicopter to land.

Michael’s boyfriend, Fadi Fawaz, 39, told the paper that Michael was “perfectly fine.”

“Of course I was worried, but I have spoken to him, and he is good. He suffered a few bruises, but there is nothing to worry about. He’s due out soon, but I don’t know when. I have no idea what happened. I wasn’t there,” Fawaz said, speaking at Michael’s home.

Michael was sentenced to eight weeks in prison in September 2010 for crashing his car into a store while under the influence of cannabis, was fined and was banned from driving for five years.

Last year, he canceled his tour of Australia because of “major anxiety” brought on by his 2011 battle with a bout of life-threatening pneumonia in Vienna, where he was treated for a month, Reuters said.
