Gabrielle Union marries Dwyane Wade; couple has five wardrobe changes
Swish! Actress Gabrielle Union has married basketball star Dwyane Wade.
The “Being Mary Jane” star and the Miami Heat point guard wed Saturday at Chateau Artisan castle in Miami, according to the New York Times.
The nuptials, which featured a performance by John Legend, were a black-and-white themed affair, to which Union wore a strapless Dennis Basso gown from Kleinfeld Bridal and Wade wore customized DSquared2 suit and white bow tie he designed himself from Tie Bar’s wedding collection.
Female guests were asked to wear white; male guests were asked to wear black tuxes and were given the option of three different black bow ties that Wade helped design as well. The moat-surrounded castle appealed to the couple, who according to TMZ, asked their guests to sign confidentiality agreements and to refrain from using social media at the event.
“Everyone wants to look good on their wedding day,” the fashion-forward basketball star told the NYT. “And I’m not going around the back. My fiancée may have the bigger moment, but I want everyone to turn and see me when I’m walking down the aisle. I want my entrance.”
Indeed, the 32-year-old had three day-of ensembles, while Union had only two. After the ceremony, Wade changed for the 1930s juke-joint reception. He wore a one-button dinner jacket in a custom black-and-white jacquard, a gold bow tie and slimmer ankle-grazing black trousers with no socks, the paper said.
For the after-party, he donned white poplin, knee-high boxer shorts, a black-on-black camouflage silk lamé jacket, small collar shirt, narrow tie and black gladiator trainers.
Union, 41, showed off her bridal looks with a few pics on Instagram. The first snap she posted included a shout-out to Basso.
“Thank you thank you thank you @DennisBasso for helping me design THE most perfect gowns for the most special night of my life... So grateful... So happy,” she wrote.
A casual portrait bearing the hashtag “#TheWadeUnion” showed her, her new husband and his two sons Zaire, 12, and Zion, 7, and his nephew Dahveon Morris, 12, all bespoke in their white tuxedo jackets. The basketball champ’s first tailored ensemble bore white lapels while the boys’ tuxes were offset with black trim.
“Our next chapter begins...together. #WadeUnion,” the athlete wrote on Facebook, posting the same snapshot.
Wade took on much of the planning himself, saying that Union “had input, but when we started, it was 85/15 leading my way. Now, it’s probably 70/30.”
About 175 to 200 guests were invited to the reception and 250 to 275 were on the guest list for the after-party.
Wade’s teammate Chris Bosh and wife Adrienne, NBA star Carmelo Anthony and wife LaLa Anthony, the Portland Trail Blazers’ Dorell Wright and wife Mia, comedian Kevin Hart, filmmaker Will Packer, “Survivor” alum Corinne Kaplan and Kardashian bestie Jonathan Cheban were among the invitees, Us Weekly reported.
The couple began dating in 2008 and Wade proposed to his lady love last December with an 8.5-carat engagement ring on the spot in Miami where their new home was being built. Shortly after the engagement news broke, Wade confirmed reports saying that he’d fathered a child with friend Aja Metoyer while he and Union were on a brief break from their relationship.
