Cate Blanchett has had romantic relations with women “many times” and readily divulged the revelation in a recent interview.

The Oscar-winning actress, who is promoting her latest film, “Carol,” ahead of its debut at the Cannes Film Festival this week, was discussing the subject matter of her period drama with Variety.

Blanchett, 45, plays a married New Yorker who has an affair with a young department store clerk (Rooney Mara) in Todd Haynes’ adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel, “The Price of Salt.” The film was in development for 15 years and the titular star said she prepared for the role by reading “a lot of girl-on-girl books from the period.”

When asked about her history with same-sex relationships, Blanchett replied coyly: “On film -- or in real life?”

The Australian actress then confirmed that she’s had past relationships with women “many times,” without going into further detail.

Her character never comes out as a lesbian in the film; likewise, the “Cinderella” actress said she doesn’t rely on labels for sexual orientation and “never thought about it.”

The star has been wed to the Sydney Theatre Company’s artistic director, Andrew Upton, since 1997. The couple have three sons together and confirmed their recent adoption of a daughter in March.
