Brooke Burke-Charvet of ‘DWTS’ reveals thyroid cancer diagnosis

Brooke Burke-Charvet, cohost of “Dancing With the Stars,” has thyroid cancer and is looking at surgery, she announced Thursday in a video to her fans.

“I’m going to have a have a nice big scar right here across my neck,” the 41-year-old mother of four says, making a cutting gesture with her finger across her throat. “And I don’t get to just walk around and pretend like nothing happened or not follow up or not share it because it’s going to be pretty much dead center.”

She’d left fans hanging in July after she shared on ModernMom.com that she’d gotten a biopsy, then didn’t follow up with the results. That biopsy came after she’d delayed a recommended ultrasound for eight months, changing her mind only after talking to a friend who was battling thyroid cancer.

“And why the hell didn’t I check this eight months ago when my internist told me to?,” she wrote back in July. “Too busy, I guess, which today feels like an irresponsible, stupid and lame excuse.”

It’s not the TV host’s first thyroid concern. She had been previously diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, “which means my thyroid doesn’t function,” she told Prevention this year. “I take a synthetic thyroid pill. I don’t even like to take an aspirin, but I have to take this every day.”

Now, she says, she’s actually never felt better, an irony she called “so crazy.”

“Here’s the way I see it,” she says in the video. “I’m just going to make a positive out of this negative thing and I’m going to be a really good patient and I’m going to do everything that i need to do, and I’ve booked my surgery.”

Burke-Charvet’s work schedule will not be affected by her thyroidectomy, her rep said Thursday.
