Amy Schumer makes no apologies in NSFW thank-you speech
Amy Schumer got a little bit of trailblazing validation at UK Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards in London on Tuesday.
The “Inside Amy Schumer” comic, known for her bawdy comedy, biting observations on sexism and -- more recently -- throwing herself at the feet of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West at the Time 100 gala, received the magazine’s Trailblazer of the Year Award on Tuesday and delivered a hilarious NSFW speech speech to boot.
“I’m probably 160 pounds right now and I can catch a [expletive] whenever I want. Like that’s the truth. It’s not a problem,” she said right off the bat.
The 34-year-old said she felt “glamorous” at the glittery event, though she readily shared a time in her life when she wasn’t quite so.
“I didn’t lose my two front teeth until I was in fifth grade, which is very late. And that very same week I got my period, which is early. So I was just like this jack-o-lantern with [breasts] walking around... And I had one of those moms that said ‘You don’t need to shave above your knee,’ just a werewolf, Christopher Robin, from here on down,” she quipped.
Then she took aim at women’s magazines that usually relegate female comics to embarrassing and demeaning photo shoots, saying that wasn’t the case with Glamour.
“They’re the first magazine that said, ‘Smile, be you.’ Glamour has given me a lot, Glamour has given me a voice,’” she said.
“No, I’m not going to apologize for who I am and I’m going to actually love the skin that I’m in and not be striving for some other version of myself,” she continued. “I make fun of women’s magazines a lot because they’re just great fodder and some of them make you feel bad for being born [a woman],” she said, though using much more colorful language and explicit examples.
Overall, though, she was grateful to be there and told the mag that it “will be very exciting when what I am doing isn’t trailblazing anymore.”
She also gave a shout-out to one of her co-attendees, screen icon Goldie Hawn, who was also at the event.
“Goldie Hawn, who I just have loved and has made me laugh so much. To be that beautiful and vulnerable and [expletive] hilarious, and a boss, it’s been so inspiring.”
Fellow attendee Kerry Washington of “Scandal” also praised the comedian’s speech.
“AMY You just gave a speech that gave me life! I love you and your brain soooo much. #GlamourAwards,” she tweeted.
It’s been a good week for Schumer. On Sunday, her Comedy Central series earned her a Critics Choice Award and a Peabody Award. “30 Rock’s” Tina Fey presented her with the Peabody and the funnywomen locked lips onstage for all to see.
