Alanis Morissette, business management firm settle lawsuit over alleged embezzlement

Alanis Morissette and GSO Business Management have reached a settlement in a lawsuit alleging that nearly $4.8 million had been skimmed out of her accounts by her former business manager Jonathan Schwartz, a member of the management firm.

“I am pleased to have the civil part of this matter resolved,” Morissette said in a joint statement issued by the singer and GSO.

The LLC filed a lawsuit May 16 seeking to expel Schwartz and recoup $588,000 he’d been advanced. While Morisette’s lawsuit is settled “in its entirety,” according to GSO attorney Chris Reeder, the firm’s suit is proceeding.

For the time being, Schwartz has been suspended by the firm.

“GSO appreciates the patience, cooperation and trust that Alanis showed in allowing GSO to address this matter,” Reeder said in the joint statement, which also noted that Morissette and the firm are both “committed to cooperating fully with any criminal proceedings that may result against Mr. Schwartz.”

Schwartz had no comment Wednesday.

According to her lawsuit filed May 17, during a review of her finances when she changed business managers, Morissette discovered cash had been withdrawn by Schwartz without her knowledge at least 116 times in 2010-2014, for a total of $4,767,900.

Terms of the out-of-court settlement were not disclosed.
