Bryan Cranston, Vince Gilligan grab DGA TV nominations

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominees for its awards for TV and commercials Thursday morning, and “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston and creator Vince Gilligan both received nominations, though Cranston’s nomination was not just for “Breaking Bad.”

Gilligan received his second DGA nomination for directing the acclaimed series finale episode, “Felina,” while Cranston was nominated for directing the midseason premiere, “Blood Money,” which featured the tense garage confrontation between Cranson’s Walter White and his DEA agent brother-in-law Hank, played by Dean Norris.

But Cranston was also nominated in the comedy series category for directing the episode of “Modern Family” titled “The Old Man & The Tree.” Cranston received his first DGA nomination last year for directing an episode of “Modern Family.”

Other nominees in the drama series category include David Fincher for the opening episode of “House of Cards,” Lesli Linka Glatter for “Homeland” and David Nutter for “The Rains of Castamere” (a.k.a. the “Red Wedding” episode) on “Game of Thrones.”

Nominated along with Cranston in the comedy series category are Mark Cendrowski for “The Big Bang Theory,” Gail Mancuso for “Modern Family,” Beth McCarthy-Miller for the final episode of “30 Rock” and Anthony Rich, also for “The Big Bang Theory.”

Directors nominated for TV movies or miniseries include Stephen Frears for “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight,” David Mamet for “Phil Spector,” Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford for “The Sound of Music Live,” Nelson McCormick for “Killing Kennedy” and Steven Soderbergh for “Behind the Candelabra.”

Nominees in the category of regularly scheduled variety/talk/news/sports programming include Dave Diomedi for “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” Andy Fisher for “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Jim Hoskinson for “The Colbert Report,” Don Roy King for “Saturday Night Live” and Chuck O’Neil for “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.”

Nominees in the category of variety/talk/news/sports specials include Louis C.K. for “Louis C.K.: Oh My God,” Joel Gallen for “2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony,” Louis J. Horvitz for “The 55th Annual Grammy Awards,” Don Mischer for “The 85th Annual Academy Awards” and Glenn Weiss for “The 67th Annual Tony Awards.”

Directors nominated for reality shows include Matthew Bartley for “The Biggest Loser,” Neil P. DeGroot for “72 Hours,” Paul Starkman for “Top Chef,” J. Rupert Thompson for “The Hero” and Bertram Van Munster for “The Amazing Race.”

Directors nominated for children’s programs are Stephen Herek for “Jinxed,” Jeffrey Hornaday for “Teen Beach Movie,” Jonathan Judge for “Swindle,” Amy Schatz for “An Apology to Elephants” and Adam Weissman for “A.N.T. Farm.”

Commercial director nominees include Fredrik Bond for Heineken and Johnny Walker ads, John X. Carey for a Dove ad, Noam Murro for Guinness, DirecTV and Volkswagen ads, Martin de Thurah for Hennessy and Acura ads, and Matthijs van Heijningen for Sony Playstation and Verizon ads.

The nominees for film directing will be announced Monday. The winners will be announced at the 66th Annual DGA Awards dinner on Jan. 25 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.
