Cannes 2014: Watch trailers for ‘Homesman,’ ‘Foxcatcher’ and more

The Cannes Film Festival has announced its 2014 lineup, showcasing some 49 features from more than 28 countries, with a combination of high-profile awards hopefuls, Hollywood commercial plays and anticipated directorial debuts.

Here’s a look at the trailers of some of the buzzed-about selections that will debut after the festival kicks off May 14.

“The Homesman”: Tommy Lee Jones’ second feature film as a director comes nine years after his well-received debut, “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada,” premiered at Cannes.

In addition to directing, Jones also stars in “The Homesman,” a Western based on a novel by Glendon Swarthout. Jones plays a claim jumper rescued by a pioneer woman (Hilary Swank) and enlisted to help get a group of women across Nebraska. Meryl Streep also stars. The film is currently seeking distribution.

“Foxcatcher”: Based on the autobiography of Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz, “Foxcatcher” centers on the infamous 1996 murder of Dave Schultz, Mark’s brother and fellow Olympian, by chemical fortune heir John du Pont. The film stars Steve Carell as Du Pont, Mark Ruffalo as Dave Schultz and Channing Tatum as Mark Schultz.

“Foxcatcher” was originally slated to open during the 2013 awards season but was ultimately postponed so director Bennet Miller (“Moneyball,” “Capote”) could continue working on it. Sony Pictures Classics will release the film later this year.

“The Rover”: Australian director David Michod’s follow-up to his indie gangster movie “Animal Kingdom” will screen as a midnight selection. A post-apocalyptic thriller set in the outback, “The Rover” stars Guy Pearce as a hardened loner who will stop at nothing to recover his prize possession -- his car -- from a gang of thieves. Robert Pattinson stars as a man wounded and left behind by the same gang, then enlisted by Pearce on his mission.

“The Rover” opens June 13.

“Maps to the Stars”: Pattinson will also star in David Cronenberg’s latest movie, which marks their second collaboration; their first, “Cosmopolis,” premiered at Cannes in 2012.

“Maps to the Stars,” which also features Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska and John Cusack, is an exploration of Hollywood shallowness and selfishness, centered on the family of a child actor. An explicit trailer for the film can be seen here.

“The Captive”: Ryan Reynolds and Rosario Dawson star in Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s (“The Sweet Hereafter,” “Devil’s Knot”) psychological thriller about the kidnapping of a man’s young daughter and how it destroys the relationships among the people involved.

“How to Train Your Dragon 2”: DreamWorks Animation’s sequel will premiere out of competition, using its Cannes appearance to drum up interest ahead of a June 13 U.S. release and international roll-out.

The movie picks up the story of the young Viking Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and his dragon Toothless as they encounter a mysterious dragon rider (Cate Blanchett) and come into conflict with a power-hungry warlod (Djimon Hounsou).
