“American Hustle,” writer-director David O. Russell’s fanciful retelling of the late 1970s Abscam government corruption scandal, was named the best motion picture, comedy or musical Sunday at the Golden Globe Awards.

The win comes a year after the filmmaker’s “Silver Linings Playbook” took home a Globe for star Jennifer Lawrence, who co-stars in “American Hustle.”

A late-season entry into the awards race, “American Hustle” with its ensemble cast of Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Lawrence has become one of the most honored movies of the year and is a leading contender for the Academy Awards.

Before its best picture win from the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., “American Hustle” collected top prizes from the AFI Awards and film critics’ organizations in several major markets, including New York. It also was shortlisted for the Producers Guild of America Award.

Co-written by Eric Warren Singer, “American Hustle” also has performed surprisingly well at the box office, grossing more than $90 million in its first five weeks of release. In winning its picture category, the film defeated “Her,” “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Nebraska” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
