KPCC employees join SAG-AFTRA union
Employees of Southern California Public Radio are joining Hollywood’s largest union.
About 65 reporters, producers, show hosts and news anchors of the Pasadena-based KPCC have voted to join SAG-AFTRA, the union representing more than 165,000 actors, recording artists, talk show hosts and journalists.
Southern California Public Radio, a nonprofit organization that is part of American Public Media, operates KPCC-FM (89.3) in Los Angeles and Orange counties, KUOR-FM (89.1) in the Inland Empire and KVLA-FM (90.3) in the Coachella Valley.
Employees of National Public Radio already belong to SAG-AFTRA, which was formed last year with the merger of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
“We’re pleased and excited with the results of the union election at KPCC,” SAG-AFTRA said in a statement. “We are looking forward to working with the new SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit in partnership with KPCC management to negotiate a first contract.”
Matt DeBord, a KPCC reporter and member of the union organizing committee, said in a statement: “We want to thank our KPCC station employees who participated in this election and we look forward to continuing our working relationship as we move forward.”
The organizing campaign at KPCC started last year. Station employees requested an election with the National Labor Relations Board on Nov. 20. In a vote overseen by the labor board Friday, 35 employees voted in favor of joining the union, while 26 voted against.
