Grammys 2013: Juanes to perform at USC in charity event

Some pop stars like to pump up their charitable and global-citizen bona fides, particularly around awards season time.

Then there’s Juanes, the Colombian rocker who actually practices the kind of civic consciousness that other celebrities merely posture. Over the years, he has performed for free and advocated relentlessly on behalf of issues such as indigenous people’s rights and land-mine clearance.

This week, Juanes, whose album “MTV Unplugged” won last year’s Latin Grammy for album of the year and is nominated in the Latin pop album category at Sunday’s Grammy Awards, will be spending part of this pre-Grammy week in L.A. working on behalf of youth music education.

He’ll be performing Wednesday evening at USC as part of the fourth annual “Grammy in the Schools Live! — A Celebration of Music & Education,” which showcases several high school music-training and education initiatives that are supported by the Grammy Foundation. Juanes will be joined by current members and student alumni of the programs.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert at USC’s Grand Ballroom are $20, available at www.grammyintheschools.com.
