3-D supplier RealD inks another deal in China
RealD Inc., the leading supplier of 3-D technology for the cinema industry, has signed another deal to bolster its theatrical business in China.
The Beverly Hills-based company on Thursday announced an agreement with SMI Corp., a Chinese entertainment and media company, to provide 3-D systems for 100 screens across SMI’s Steller International Cineplex theater chain.
Stellar operates more than 40 theaters with 250 screens across China.
“This partnership with RealD will combine the world’s most cutting-edge 3-D cinema technology with our five-star multiplexes, bringing Chinese audiences a brand new movie-going experience,” said Bruce Ren, president of SMI International Cinemas Ltd.
The announcement is the latest of several deals RealD has announced with Chinese exhibitors in recent months.
“Chinese cinema box office is growing at a record-breaking rate thanks to circuits like Stellar and their commitment to bringing world class multiplexes and premium entertainment experiences to cities throughout China,” said Edman Chan, RealD General Manager of Asia for Cinema. “This agreement adds to RealD’s growing traction in the Chinese exhibition market.”
RealD 3-D is available on about 650 cinema screens in China, with future commitments for approximately 1,350 additional installations. Globally, RealD is the world’s most widely used 3-D cinema technology. Approximately 20,200 screens in 68 countries are equipped with RealD 3D.
