I’m just shocked and really tickled. I didn’t expect it all. I think the thing that is so exciting about it is that it’s SAG. To be nominated by my peers, by actors, that makes it all the more richer.

December movie releases get little SAG Awards love

It may be the most wonderful time of the year in other ways, but movies opening on or around Christmas traditionally face a significant hurdle when it comes to landing SAG Awards nominations. Voting for this year's SAG Awards nominations closed Dec. 7, putting films opening later in December at a competitive disadvantage, and, as in years past, the nominations largely reflected that.

Hollywood has always loved Hollywood during awards season.

This year is no exception with "Trumbo" earning three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations Wednesday morning: ensemble, lead male actor for Bryan Cranston as blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and female supporting actor for Helen Mirren as his archenemy, the conservative and powerful gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.

It’s American history, it’s hip-hop history, it’s American popular culture, it’s just an important story. Awards, with an R-rated film about guys from the neighborhood you don’t automatically say this is the thing that’s going to do it. I will say, when you’re staying true to the heart of the story and the heart of the intention of the group, N.W.A, to just be yourself, we adapted that into our approach to the movie, to just unapologetically be yourself and I think that’s part of the reason why the world responded. Now that we’re in the conversation we’re happy about it.

Will a very Murray deadpan lead to a SAG Award?

We are grateful to the Screen Actors Guild for celebrating our first film, "Beasts of No Nation," with an ensemble and acting nomination. We are also honored to have received so much love for our shows -- "House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," "A Very Murray Christmas" and "Marvel's Daredevil" -- and to work with these visionary storytellers and impressive performers. We couldn't be happier for their recognition this morning.

Maybe we shouldn't be surprised by Sarah Silverman's SAG Awards nomination

Sarah has a pool of emotional and intellectual depth. You put the camera on her and let it run.
'I Smile Back' director Adam Salky

One of the surprises of Wednesday's SAG Awards nominations was Sarah Silverman's inclusion in the category "performance by a female actor in a leading role." But all the way back in January at Sundance, people were talking about Silverman's turn toward dramatic acting in "I Smile Back," as Times writer Amy Kaufman wrote during the Utah festival. Later, The Times' Jeffrey Fleishman spent time with Silverman and wrote this profile:

They asked me that same question when I won at the New York Film Critics’ awards a couple weeks ago. Then, I said was getting some Indian curry. Ironically, my mom is making Indian curry right now. So I guess that’s how I’m celebrating. It’s like it’s my good-luck curry.

(Robert Gauthier / Los Angeles Times)
I’ve heard here and there that people were tickled by it. I saw the movie myself, and I thought it was a lot of fun. At the end of the day, as a man who did both the performances, I can say I put a lot more effort into the '99 Homes' performance than 'The Night Before.' '99 Homes' was a huge undertaking, and it was a world I’m not familiar with. I had to do a lot of work. I didn’t know what half my lines meant.
