Glory hallelujah: ‘Lincoln’ trailer debuts

Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” premiered its official trailer today and, in 2 minutes and 21 seconds, it manages to hew to every preconceived notion we harbored about the movie (burnished images, John Williams musical uplift) while offering a measure of hope through star Daniel Day-Lewis that this could be something truly special.

Just listening to Day-Lewis’ Kentucky-tinged accent as he rails at his advisors that “blood’s been spilled to afford us this moment ... now ... now ... now!” and we’re ready to queue up for the film’s Nov. 9 opening, even if it sounds like Williams’ glory-glory-hallelujah score is going to be nudging us in the ribs for two-plus hours.

Two-time Oscar winner Day-Lewis would seem poised for a fifth lead actor nomination for his work here. The film itself is viewed as a major Oscar contender for best picture, director and writer Tony Kushner, who adapted Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.” Kushner last collaborated with Spielberg on 2005’s “Munich.”

And, yes, that’s Sally Field playing Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd. Put her in awards-season play too. As for Tommy Lee Jones, he’s playing this guy. Spot-on casting, right?
