‘Furious 7’ becomes highest grossing film ever in China
“Furious 7” has sped past “Transformers: Age of Extinction” to become the highest-grossing film ever in China.
The Universal Pictures franchise film, which cost Universal about $190 million to make, held the top spot at the Chinese box office for the third consecutive week in a row, adding about $72.3 million to its haul.
Michael Bay’s “Transformers” film pulled in $319 million in China last year. Universal reported Monday that “Furious 7” has made $325.8 million in 15 days at the Chinese box office.
The James Wan-directed film takes an ensemble that includes Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez from London to Los Angeles, Tokyo, the Dominican Republic and Abu Dhabi.
After the death of Walker midway through production, the studio completed his remaining scenes using computer effects and Walker’s brothers Caleb and Cody as stand-ins.
The film has become a phenomenon in other regions overseas. It is also the highest grossing film of all time in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, Trinidad and Vietnam.
